My Fall 2017 Fashion Staples

Now that fall has officially made it’s way to North Carolina (with an exception of this week since it’s been 90 degrees & humid) I have begun to break out some new and old seasonal fashion favorites. Fall is the time for jewel tones, cozy fabrics, and lots of layering, and as you all know by now I am SO ready for it! This year I’ve taken to several new fall trends and can’t wait to incorporate them into everyday looks as well as fun blog posts for you guys!

I have to start with my favorite piece of all-my suede moto jacket. I snagged this beauty during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and knew I have to make it mine after a friend raved about the one she got last year. Guys. Somehow this jacket is even more beautiful in person. The spice colored suede is so incredibly smooth and the rich color pops against the dark matte hardware. It fits impeccably and I’m already dreaming up outfits with it layered over turtlenecks, graphic tees, and chunky knits for fall/winter.

A trend that seems to have blown up this fall are chenille sweaters, and I’m definitely not mad about it. These sweaters honestly feel like you’re wrapped up in a blanket of coziness all while you’re looking seasonably chic. I personally prefer the chenille knits with a bit of a sheen to them, but all styles are equally amazing. The mustard sweater is one from aerie I got early in the season because I knew these would be a hit. I ended up getting it in cream too and it has a bit of tinsel running through it too! These sweaters have a boxy fit and are slightly cropped, but I went with a medium so it would be nice and oversized (plus I have insanely long arms). These sweaters are still on their site and are marked down too-I highly recommend!

One trend I kept seeing all over New York and Paris fashion week this past September was fiddler/baker boy/newsboy caps. These popular hats seem to have several names but  no matter what you call ’em they’re seriously cute for fall! This is definitely a love/hate trend, but after being inspired by bloggers and Pinterest I wanted to give it a shot. This fiddler cap was an absolute barganza at Target and was a great way for me to try the trend without spending an insane amount on a hat.

As you may have seen in my last blog post I have taken to a new denim trend-cropped kick flares. These are perfect to pair with ankle boots or tennis shoes and add a bit of a ’60s/’70s flare to every outfit. Again, these are from Just Black Denim and fit like a dream! The button front closure adds a nice touch as well as the scalloped frayed hem. Love, love these!

Corduroy and suede mini skirts have been big for the last several fall/winter seasons, but this year I finally decided to get on board. The black zip front skirt shown above is one I made from a purchased sewing pattern and ended up tweaking along the way so that it was perfect for me. The ring zipper pull adds a retro feel and the black corduroy is insanely soft and stretchy. I can’t wait to style this with cropped sweaters and graphic tees along with over the knee boots!

Lastly is an oldie but a goodie-Vans sneakers. I’ve always been a fan of Vans (and rhyming, apparently) and have gone through several pairs in my lifetime, however, I have never owned any of the Old Skool styles! After seeing so many of my favorite bloggers with these I knew I had to have them too (I’m very impulsive, could you tell?). These are super comfy and add a bit of a boho/retro feel to even the most polished outfits.

If this post hasn’t made you want a hot cup of apple cider and a slice of pumpkin bread I don’t know what will. You will definitely be seeing more of these pieces over the next few months! What are some of your go-to fall pieces?

Happy Fall, y’all!

Star Gazing

Do you ever find yourself obsessed with a certain item but aren’t sure where the root of the love affair came from? That’s exactly how I feel about star printed anything. Since around this time last year, anything with a star print or detail has caught my eye and won my heart. Something about the minimal yet whimsical design is so fun to incorporate into my wardrobe and decor. This top in particular is one of my favorites to dress up or down. It adds a feminine touch to an all black look featuring high waisted black denim and pointed toe chelsea boots as well as with this casual weekend ootd.

a6f4196e-a442-46c5-8753-432678e8af724138fb6a-56fb-4799-bdd5-889c2ca59e59aefc236f-d3bd-4222-bce9-be8072ffa729

My star printed top was an absolute STEAL from Forever 21-I got it for $10 during an online sale and even got free shopping (insert confetti emoji). Kick flare jeans are a trend I never thought I could pull off because of my height, but these have just the right amount of flare and don’t hit my legs at an awkward spot. Just Black denim has done it again-the button front of these jeans adds a retro flare and the scalloped raw hem makes them stand out from other cropped flare jeans. I finished this casual weekend look with my leather slip on Vans and of course my trusty Daniel Wellington watch.

Hope you all have a great rest of your week!

Denim Days

IMG_980620170917-IMG_9820

Over the years my love for denim has grown into an outright obsession. A good pair of jeans or chambray shirt acts as a foundation piece for an outfit that can be dressed up or down in so many ways. One of my go-to looks is rocking a Canadian tuxedo of sorts-double denim. I have a few rules for myself when pairing a double denim outfit-the washes must differ in either color, tone, or distressing and I always ensure that I don’t get lost in an oversized denim shirt or jacket. You never want your outfit to wear you, so to make sure your denim look isn’t swallowing you whole: roll up the sleeves of a shirt or jacket, opt for a cropped fit or crop your shirt yourself so that your waist stays defined, or balance wider fitting tops with a skinny or tailored pair of jeans.

My favorite part of wearing a double denim outfit is that you can dress the look up or down with the accessories. For daytime, throwing on a mule or tennis shoe with a carry-all bag and minimal earrings makes the denim duo easy for running errands or going to class and adding a strappy heel, statement earrings and an embellished clutch can take the look into the evening.

IMG_9809IMG_9845

Both my high waisted jeans and chambray top are from Madewell, which I have to say is one of my absolute favorite stores. The fit and quality of their jeans is impeccable and they even source their denim within the States! I have on the 10” rise super skinny with denim from Cone Mills in Greensboro, N.C. I don’t know how they do it, but the pockets and waist suck you in without bunching and giving you the awkward “high waist jean pooch.” My chambray top was bought on a whim and fits super oversized. Since this top is so boxy, I left the bottom two buttons undone and tied the top up, tucking in the sides and back to help define my waist. The ruffle detailing along the sides adds a feminine touch to such a boyish top while keeping it classic and minimal.

IMG_9831

To finish off the look I paired my double denim outfit with some of my new favorite shoes-Adidas Stan Smiths. These are an absolute wardrobe staple and I’ve found myself reaching for them almost daily. They are minimal and classic enough to be worn with jeans and a t-shirt as well as with a pair of culottes and a chunky sweater. I like mine to look a little roughed up too because who wants a stark white tennis shoe? My earrings are from fab’rik Raleigh and are another go-to for me at the moment. After spotting these on some of my favorite celebs and fashion bloggers I snagged them and have been pairing them with both dressier and more casual looks.

Would any of you sport the “Canadian tuxedo” look too?

Hope you all have a great week!

Pre-Fall Layers

20170915-IMG_245720170915-IMG_2435

Even though it’s still in the 80’s here in North Carolina, I’ve already broken out some of my favorite fall pieces (no shame 😉 ). Since it doesn’t get properly cold here until late October/early November, lightweight layers are the way to go since the mornings and evenings are a bit chilly. Kimonos add the perfect amount of interest to a simple outfit while acting as an easy layering piece for the cooler parts of the day. I’ve always been a strong believer in the power of a kimono since it can take an outfit to another level just by throwing it over your shoulders. A chiffon kimono with floral or lace accents is the perfect outfit topper for the evening while a more textured fabric kimono creates depth and a little sumthin’ sumthin’ to whatever you’re wearing.

20170915-IMG_243420170915-IMG_2461

My tiered knit dress is from fab’rik Raleigh and I knew I had to have it as soon as I saw it. It’s been such an easy throw-on piece for the summer and I love that it has a bit of a bohemian flare to it with the gathered tiers (plus it has pockets, major added bonus!). My purple and tan printed kimono is from one of my favorite places-TJ Maxx. I always end up getting into trouble whenever I stop in, and in this case I walked out with two kimonos for my fall wardrobe. I spotted this one on a coworker and within a week I had added it to my wardrobe too! I love how simple the print is and that it’s a mid-duster length which is perfect for putting over both dresses and jeans.

My brown huarache booties are by Jeffrey Campbell but are sadly not produced anymore. I had a SUPER lucky day at a local consignment shop and snagged these for $35 (originally around $200) and they were brand spankin’ new! They’re surprisingly comfortable and have quite an edgy-boho vibe to them. Under my dress is my go-to Aerie bobo lace plunge bralette and I have the sweetest little necklace on by Harper Made jewelry. We began carrying some of her pieces at fab’rik and I can honestly say that I am obsessed. At this point I own four necklaces and two pairs of earrings, but I’m sure I’ll be picking up more! Her jewelry is dainty with a bohemian touch, is gold plated and are all one of a kind. Be sure to check out her Instagram and her Etsy shop, you’re going to fall in love!

What are some of your favorite fall transitional pieces?

Over the years I’ve noticed that I have the tendency to stock up on multiples whenever I love an item or product. Around four years ago I made a trip to the Urban Outfitters store in Durham to get my seasonal fix and ended up scoring this tank in the burgundy color way on sale for only $20. I adore this top and have worn it to death over the last several years. The gold metal detailing adds the perfect bohemian flare and the cut of the top is super flattering with a bralette underneath. A couple months ago my mom, sister and I were in a consignment shop scoping out some steals and my sister came across this blue tank for $7, tags on and everything. Knowing how much I loved my other top like this I snagged this one too because why not? I have fallen back in love with both of these tops and honestly love having options when it comes to the color!

I threw on my trusty Just Black distressed skinnies to add a little edge to the look and grabbed one of my favorite summer shoes to tie it all together. These platforms are from fab’rik Raleigh and are much more comfortable than they look. After wearing them for some of my longer retail shifts I realized how much more versatile flatform sandals are than they appear. It definitely helps that these are lightweight so that I don’t feel like I have Frankenstein feet walking around (I know you know what I mean!).

IMG_2328

This outfit is perfect for transitioning into the cooler days by trading out the sandals for a taupe ankle boot and throwing on a chunky cardigan over the tank for a bit of warmth. After having a few low humidity 70 degree days here in Raleigh I am beyond eager for boot and sweater weather. Hopefully this weather hasn’t been a complete tease and we’ll continue on this trend of fall weather. I’ve already begun rocking my favorite fall/winter nail polishes to maybe coax the cooler weather along. 😉

Casual Summer OOTD

IMG_6110

IMG_6113IMG_6116

Can I just start by saying that I am SO over the summer heat and humidity? When planning my outfits every day in the summer I try to piece together the most lightweight pieces possible to prevent my clothes from becoming drenched in sweat (gross, I know). This super thin graphic tank was one of those exciting Target sale finds that I snagged for only $12 and it’s one of my favorite colors at the moment. I popped a white Aerie bralette underneath to tie in the white shorts and did a little front tuck to help my waist stay defined with the oversized tank.

These super high waisted shorts have to be some of the best fitting ones I own, and of course because I couldn’t just have one pair I got these in a vintage light wash too. I’m incredibly picky when it comes to shorts and these checked off every fit and style category for me. These are by Just Black denim and they mimic a pair of Free People shorts with the frayed hem and distressing but were a fraction of the price at fab’rik Raleigh. Just another testament to how how seriously awesome Just Black’s denim really is (can you tell I’m obsessed?).

After getting my leather slip on Vans last winter I was hooked on the fashionable tennis shoe trend. This summer I decided to get a pair that may be more comfortable for working retail and I came upon these by J Slides. When I say these shoes are like walking on clouds I’m not exaggerating. These have a gel insert made into the sole and a padded heel making these perfect for being on my feet for 9+ hours. I especially love how expensive these look-the taupe mock croc detail is very well done and the platform at the bottom gives them a similar vibe to the Vince slip ons. You will definitely be seeing more of these in the fall and winter since they look so chic styled with frayed hem skinnies! Lastly I added simple accessories to this look with my everyday rings, a pair of geometric hoop earrings, and my favorite watch by Daniel Wellington.

As summer is coming to an end I can’t help but stare longingly at my sweaters and ankle boots in my closet. Even though North Carolina typically has a warm fall, you better believe that I’ll be breaking out my cool weather apparel on the first cool, low humidity day we have!

What fall fashion staples are you most looking forward to styling in the coming months?

Usually I’m not the biggest fan of going crazy on seasonal trends, but this summer I ended up falling hard for floral embroidery. While I was in Orlando for a celebratory trip to Disney World after college graduation we stopped by Disney Springs to check out the shopping and restaurants. Right as we got off the shuttle bus we walked into the shopping center and immediately came upon Zara. I hadn’t been to a Zara store since I visited New York City a couple years ago, so walking right up to one as soon as we got to Disney Springs was fate. I spent ages walking around admiring every item, but the one piece I couldn’t stop thinking about was this white floral embroidered top. The tank also came in a black version, but since I own SO much black already I decided to branch out and go for the light and airy white version. It hits just at the waist of my high waisted jeans and y’all already know I love a good high neck top. This top seriously fits like a dream and adds a girly touch to my distressed jeans.

These distressed hem jeans are by Just Black Denim and I honestly think saying I’m obsessed with the brand is an understatement. Being a new brand at my work I was curious about the fit and quality so I snagged the light wash distressed pair I have on and fell in love instantly. Although these are still a bit pricy, these fit and wear like a $200 pair of Hudson or DL jeans. Don’t get me wrong, I love my high-end denim, but why shell out for one pair of those when you could pick up 1 if not 2 pair of Just Black jeans for a fraction of the cost?

The high waist of these jeans fits true to size and doesn’t do any of the weird crotch bunching when you sit down. I rarely wash my denim to keep the integrity of the wash and fit, and these have never gotten baggy knees or butt after wearing them for a couple of months. Since purchasing these jeans I have also gotten the dark wash version, a pair of black high waisted fringe hem jeans (major heart eyes), and two pair of high waisted distressed shorts. No joke guys, these jeans are the bomb. If you’re local to the Raleigh area make sure you stop by fab’rik Raleigh and try on a pair-I promise you’ll fall in love!

IMG_2162IMG_2167

I think my favorite find of the summer has to be these bright orange sandals by Franco Sarto. I snagged these shoes at TJ Maxx and can’t even tell you how many times I’ve worn them. They’re super comfortable and add the perfect pop of color to every look. I can wear these to work and be on my feet for 9+ hours and I swear it feels like I’ve been walking on clouds all day. My only issue with these is that the faux suede gets dirty so fast, but honestly this is such a minor complaint since these sandals are so insanely comfy and cute.

My strength has never been spring/summer fashion since I always just want to throw on something lightweight and loose (the North Carolina humidity is not my friend), but I really made an effort this year to add pieces that are both wardrobe staples and a bit out of my comfort zone. Now that fall is just around the corner I have been super eager to break out my favorite dark nail polishes (which may or may not have happened already) as well as my go-to boots, but I will do my best to have some self restraint and dress for summer for just a few weeks more. Although we’ve had a relatively mild summer, I must say that I am so ready for those 60 degree days!

What were some of your summer wardrobe essentials?

xx, Rachel
